About Propylon

The name of the Propylon blog comes from the ancient Greek monumental gateway (English: propylaea). Its most famous example is the propylaea of the Acropolis of Athens. Everyone who wanted to access the sanctuary that lay behind it had to pass through the propylaea. Its towering pillars put the people into the appropriate relation to what awaited them on the other side.

In this light, it is the intention of the Propylon blog to let everything that is of interest to the author ‘pass through’ this gateway and to put it into the relation seeming appropriate to the author.

Further, an interesting side note might be that from 1798 to 1800 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and his friend Johann Heinrich Meyer published a periodical for fine arts called “Propyläen”, which the author discovered three years after launching this blog.

(Additional information on the ancient Greek propylaea may be found here.)

Content of the Blog

The articles published in the Propylon blog (also Propylon Journal) will reflect the author’s thoughts and opinions on topics of his personal fields of interest. This will mostly regard topics, which the authors finds interesting to an extent that he wants to provide his personal opinion, and that they may be worth absorbing the precious time of those that take the trouble to read them. The topics will comprise, among others, politics, society, history, defence, religion and philosophy, as well as general matters – as far as one can predict what may be of interest to oneself.

Entries will be published in English and/or German (in the German edition of blog). Quotes that will be used in articles may be published in the original language, but the author will seek to provide an adequate translation.

It is not intended to publish articles on a regular basis. Therefore, the author asks for the understanding of the reader, should more time elapse until the next entry is published than the reader expects.

In addition to articles published in the main section, the Propylon blog features different pages (such as a quotes selection) to enhance the information offer of the blog.

The author wishes all visitors to this site an interesting read and hopes that he or she will treat possible mistakes in terms of spelling, grammar or expressions with clemency, as English is not the author’s native language. Notices, suggestions and opinions are most welcome. However, the author reserves the humble right to chose which comments are adequate and will remain on this site.
